Mastravarden

Mastravarden is the highest point on Mosterøy, with an elevation of 154 meters above sea level. This popular hiking destination is located in Stavanger municipality, Rogaland, and offers spectacular views of the surrounding islands and fjord landscape. From the top, on clear days, you can see across Boknafjorden, towards Ryfylke, and further to Karmøy and Haugalandet. The views make Mastravarden one of the most attractive hiking destinations in the area.

To reach Mastravarden, there are several marked trails starting from various locations on Mosterøy. A popular route begins at Utstein Kloster, Norway's best-preserved medieval monastery, and takes you through a varied landscape of cultural heritage sites, forests, and open moorlands. The ascent is manageable for most people, lasting about one to two hours round trip, depending on your pace and chosen route.

At the top of Mastravarden, there is a cairn and a visitor's logbox where visitors can sign their names in the hiking book. This is also a great spot for a break, with benches and open areas suitable for both picnics and relaxation. Many hikers choose to bring a thermos of coffee or hot chocolate to enjoy in the fresh mountain air.

Mastravarden is not only known for its views but also for the rich animal and plant life that surrounds its trails. On the way up, you can encounter everything from sheep grazing in the open landscape to rare flower species thriving in the barren soil.

Mastravarden is a must-visit for nature and hiking enthusiasts visiting Mosterøy, and the hike offers a perfect combination of physical activity, nature experiences, and cultural history.
